If you’re planning to arrive on Orcas Island by plane or drive to the ferry, there’s one thing for sure, you don’t really need your car once you are on the Island. That’s because there are so many other options for getting around Orcas Island during your vacation. Here are some ideas for traveling around the Island and enjoying the beautiful scenery and weather.

Taxi Service

There are auto rentals available, but why drive when you can take a taxi around the Island instead? A taxi service allows everyone in your party to enjoy the beautiful scenery on Orcas Island. Taxi service is available 24 hours a day on the Island and some taxis will even pick up your bike if you’ve ridden too far afield and need a lift back to your vacation home. However, during the busy summer vacation months, be sure to reserve your taxi ahead of time if possible to ensure quick and efficient service.

Rent a Moped or Bicycle

One of the best options during the summer for transportation around Orcas Island is renting a moped or bicycle. For a family vacation, riding bikes around the Island is an economical and fun way to see the Island at a leisurely pace and also get some exercise at the same time. And, if someone gets too tired to make the ride back, there is always the taxi service available. The best part of the bike rental service is that there is a rental location near the ferry landing so families can leave their car on the mainland and save the cost of paying to ferry it to the Island.

Rent a Car or Van

For those who really need a car or a van for transportation around the Island, there are rental services on the Island as well. Visitors can rent a car or van near the airport or at the ferry landing. One unique feature of a rental car or van is a self-guided audio driving tour of the Island available on MP3 or CD so that visitors can take a tour of the Island at their own pace.

Visitors to Orcas Island don’t have to bring their own transportation because there are so many options available on the Island. Take a nice ride on a bike or a moped and discover the Island at your own pace, or rent a taxi, car, or van to get you where you need to go. Whatever you decide, transportation is not a problem during your Orcas Island vacation.

Some of our guests have inquired about Orcas Island Mopeds, so we thought it would be useful to tell you about a great company on Orcas Island that rents mopeds.

Here is a sample FAQ from their website: OrcasMopeds.com

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What it is a Moped?
A: It is a classification of Motor Bike that has an engine displacement of 50cc’s
or less, or capable of speeds less than 30 mph.

Q: Where are the Pedals?

A: Originally mopeds did have pedals. Our Mopeds CAN be equipped with pedals,
but would you really want to pedal a 110 pound bike up an Orcas Island hill?

Q: Do I need a License to Drive a Moped?

A: YES! You need a VALID Driver’s License WITH YOU in order to drive a Moped
or Scootcar. If you are below age 18 you must also ride with your parent
or guardian.

Q: Do I have to wear a Helmet?

A: Yes, you are required by Law to wear a DOT approved Motorcycle Helmet and
eye protection (glasses) while riding a Moped or a Scootcar.

How fast can they go?

Q: How fast can they go?

A: Mopeds are regulated by law to only attain a speed of 30 mph.
Due to their small engine size they will go much slower (10-15mph) on steep
hills. Their speed will also be greatly effected by the weight of the rider.
Riders must follow the Rules of the Road and stay to the right to let faster
vehicles pass.

Q: I’ve never driven a Moped, is it hard to ride?

A: No. Our Mopeds have automatic transmissions, so you don’t need to worry
about shifting. You just need to use a throttle and brakes to control a moped.
If you can ride a bicycle you should be able to handle a moped.

Q: Can I carry a passenger on the back of a Moped?

A: Can I carry a passenger on the back of a Moped?
No, it is illegal. Our mopeds are designed for ONE rider only. To carry a
passenger a Moped must have a set of foot pegs for both the driver and the
passenger. Our Mopeds do not have foot pegs for a passenger. If you wish to ride with a passenger you would need to rent a Scootcar instead which can carry a passenger seated next to you

Q: Are their Trails around here to ride on?

A: No, there are no trails. These are road bikes, not meant for off road use. They
are licensed and a legal to use on all public roads on Orcas Island. Scootcars
however are NOT allowed to go on the road to the top of Mt. Constitution.
