Whale-Watching Tours 2014

Spring season is nigh and with it comes the beginning of the San Juan Whale-watching tours! There are many different companies to choose from and many whales to be watched, so to help you get going in the right direction, we’ve conglomerated all the 2014 San Juan whale-watching info right here.

Whale-Watching Tour Companies (In no particular order):

  • They are frolicking! What great big fishy-mammals they are!

San Juan Safaris: (As of 2013) $85 for adults & $55 for kids (age 2-12). This will get you 3 hours of watching with plenty of amenities and bonuses (hydrophone listening, ecosystem education, free use of blankets/binoculars, 90% watch success rate! and more). Look into getting reservations early because these tend to fill up quick.

  • Sea Quest Kayak: Here’s an interesting twist on the normal whale-watching routine–watch up close and personal from a kayak! They offer a couple different packages (half-day, 1-day, 2-day, etc) and they also claim to know the best whale routes for putting your peepers on the 90 resident whales.
  • Orcas Island Eclipse Charters: This tour has been around awhile and they know what they’re doing. Plus they were in the movie Free Willy 2…so there’s some celebrity status for ya. Contact them on their website for price and reservation info. They also offer up lighthouse tours!
  • Outer Island Expeditions: This company lays claim to the full package of tours. Picnics, charter fishing, crabbing, lighthouse tours, island tours and more are all thrown on top of the normal whale-watching extravaganza. They also guarantee a whale-sighting (the only ones to do so according to their site). Price and reservation info is a little hard to find so make sure you check and compare beforehand :) .
  • Not a tour, but still an interesting site: The latest Orcas Island whale sightings! The whole community is keeping a steady eye out for their particular pods. What a good way to check and see if the whales are being active before you head out on your own whale tour!
